It Is COLD!!

Yes, we hit cold - the low last night was 20.8 here at the house.  THAT'S JUST PLAIN COLD!!

And it looks like we will be cold the next couple of days. Like just above freezing cold. And they say possible rain. I hope we don't get the rain even if we are cold.

Weather change

We've had days of hot weather. Even here at the house its been triple digit weather. Plants are dying here, getting brittle and brown. I've actually lost a couple of plants. We were gone as mentioned in my last month post, and many plants took a beating with the heat. And it hadn't gotten any better. Grass has been crunchy and dry in our yard - we don't water any lawn area. Well, we suddenly got a weather change. In two days the temperatures have dropped from high 90's and triple digits to the mid 80's. Today we hit a high of about 85, and have fallen to 72 (as of my writing this). And it is raining. Actually it began a short rain at around 6 in the morning. Its now the afternoon and its raining again. Our short rain this morning bare made it to 1/10th of an inch. Texas weather

This is how strange Texas winter/spring weather can be. The other day we were happily in the 60's - 70's. Two days ago we had a high of 77, and yesterday was a high of 70.  Right now, 4:15 pm it is all of 36 degrees.  We've been having some rain (0.20 inches yesterday and about the same today), and it is a cold rain. Tonight they are saying a cold of 33-36. Yet tomorrow will be mid 40's and Friday will be 60. By Saturday we will be 70. Unfortunately the pump for transferring water to the storage tanks isn't working. At this point all we know is there is a breaker or a GFCI that is popped and we don't know where it is. We did some searching and didn't find it. But since it is so cold and wet outside we will have to continue that search another day. Preferably when its warmer. DH and I have gotten the plants out of the greenhouse and uncovered everybody else. We did that last weekend when the weather was warm. I was even able to pick up some strawberry cro...

Well it looks like we have finally hit the triple digits days of this area.  Its hot. The low at night is 76. The heat index is over 100 easily. But the garden is alive.  I've got watermelon and cantaloupes growing.  The tomato plants are alive, but not doing anything, and that's expected with this heat. The gardening guides say its time to plant the second crop of squash and green beans so I planted some seeds of both today.  The squash says 45-50 days to harvest so we'll see if they grow. Things to remember for next year:    1.  When you plant tomatoes, put cages around the baby plants.  Don't wait for them to grow up before putting cages on them.   2.  Put trellises up for melon plants.  Otherwise they will take over the yard.  Also remember that melon plants will try to grab onto things - don't plant near the asparagus plants.   3.  The zinnias and petunias are fairing better then the marigolds in the heat....
